Powered by PechaKucha-concept to World Village Festival

The popular Japanese presentation format Powered by PechaKucha will come to World Village Festival in May. These presentations will tackle topics related to the future from the perspective of sustainable development and activism. The programme will be hosted by reporter Ina Mikkola. World Village Festival will take place 29-30 May 2021 either as a virtual event, or if the Covid-19 pandemic situation allows, in the Suvilahti site in Helsinki.

Powered by PechaKucha is a presentation format where the presenter uses 20 images for 20 seconds each to convince their audience and convey their argument. The format has gained popularity particularly in the era of social media due to its highly visual and concise storytelling style. Twelve charismatic speakers who are some of the top experts in their fields will take the challenge and use this format to share the most important and compelling arguments.

− Powered by PechaKucha -concept offers glimpses of the state of the world and of the future in an inspiring and concise manner, says the festival’s Programme Manager Johanna Eurakoski.

Activism and sustainable future

Future of Activism -programme will include artist and activist Laura Eklund Nhaga, urban designer Arto Sivonen, activist Zahra Karimy, Chair of Seta – LGBTI Rights in Finland Sakris Kupila, Voima magazine’s Häiriköt-headquarter’s Jari Tamminen, and university lecturer of media and communication studies at Helsinki University Janne Matikainen.

− Activism is evolving. Instead of more traditional forms of organizing, for example through non-governmental organizations, informal networks and social media are bringing people together. Future of Activism will explore different perspectives of what activism will look like in the future, says Salla Peltonen, Head of Communication of Fingo, the festival’s main organizer.

Sustainable Future -programme will paint a vision of the future from six different perspectives: journalist and author Julia Thurén will talk about a sustainable economy, Doctor of Science (Technology) Elina Lehikoinen about the future of food production, forensic dentist Helena Ranta will address issues of inequality, Mika Välitalo from Fingo will talk about the potential of technology, Emma Sairanen from the climate group of The Finnish Nature League will discuss biodiversity and Katja Mannerström from The Finnish Refugee Council will focus on future migration patterns.

− Eliminating inequality and building a sustainable future are in our hands. We need active citizens, communities and decision makers who are ready to tackle challenges in new ways and put themselves on the line for a more just and fairer world. We also need reliable data, research, bold visions and innovations. We are eager to hear what kind of issues the Powered by PechaKucha -speakers will bring up at World Village Festival, Salla Peltonen states.

Powered by PechaKucha format will be mainly in Finnish, only Helena Gualinga will speak in English.

The festival will take place either as a virtual event or in Suvilahti

World Village Festival will take place on 29-30 May 2021 despite the Covid-19 pandemic. If by early March it’s not feasible to guarantee that large in-person gatherings and events can be organized in May, the festival will be carried out virtually. The programme numbers will be streamed online and there are also plans to move the trade fair into a virtual format.

− The exhibitors play a big role at the festival and we are currently mapping out options to move the trade fair part of the festival online as well. By early March we will be informing the exhibitors about their participation options in the case of the festival being a fully virtual event, says the festival’s Production Manager Rafael Campos.

Organizations can also participate in the festival by taking advantage of the many advertisement opportunities the festival offers. The festival magazine that will go out as an attachment to the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper and the advertisement that will be aired in between the virtual festival programme numbers will reach a wide audience. Advertising through these channels is a great way to inform people that you are a part of a network of responsible actors and at the frontlines of sustainable development. The advertising spaces can be booked through 1 April 2021. Read more about different advertising and exhibition opportunities in Finnish.
