Tuure Kilpeläinen, SUAD, art and films added to the lineup

Organised during the last week of May, the World Village Festival lineup is expanding with the addition of great Finnish gigs, art programme, films and Market of Possibilities exhibitors. This year will see the programme of the free event brought to you exceptionally on multiple venues in Helsinki: Allas Sea Pool, Market Square, Tiivistämö event venue, Temppeliaukio Church and Kino Regina. Some of the programme will be produced virtually online.

Two top Finnish names have been added to the World Village Festival music lineup at Allas Sea Pool on Sunday 29 May. One of Finland’s most popular bands, Tuure Kilpeläinen ja Kaihon Karavaani will take a long break after the summer, so their gig at the World Village Festival will be one of the last opportunities to see them live.

The other addition to the Sunday gigs at Allas Sea Pool is the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter SUAD, whose music moves between brooding dark pop and indie rock with intense emotionality. Before going solo, the indie pearl SUAD was heard singing on albums of groups and artists including Uusi Fantasia, Jaakko Eino Kalevi and Freeman.

Film screening at Kino Regina and two more films at Online Cinema

The World Village Festival programme will expand with the screening of the Danish animated documentary Flee (2021) at Kino Regina on Wednesday 25 May from 13.00 to 15.15. The film was nominated for three Oscars and is currently nominated for the 2022 LUX Audience Award. The pre-screening discussion will be themed on the EU’s role to help Ukrainian refugees.

Open from Monday to Sunday 23–29 May, the Online Cinema will feature another two new documentaries. Shepherds of the Earth (2022) by international award-winning Finnish director Iiris Härmä tells a fascinating story about the Cradle of Humankind, ancient songs, the nomadic people’s struggle to survive, lost animals, tribal wards and prehistoric fossils.

Premiering in Finland at the World Village Festival, Into the Ice (2022) follows director Lars Henrik Ostenfeld on his travels with three pioneering glaciologists into the inland ice of Greenland. The visually stunning documentary shows Ostenfeld and Professor Alun Hubbard descend 180 metres into the ice to better understand the consequences of climate change.

Art, DJs and Market of Possibilities for sustainable development

Besides the music gigs, at Allas Sea Pool you will also be able to take part in creating a collaborative work of art – Pollinator Paradise. The non-stop Aalto University Junior workshop will involve festivalgoers using textile waste to create a meadow and will also feature discussions about the significance of pollinators and meadows.

Produced at the Tiivistämö event venue, My Equal Life is an exhibition that provides glimpses into the everyday lives of ordinary people in Bangladesh. The work of internationally awarded photographer GMB Akash has been featured in publications including The Guardian, Vogue and Time. On Saturday and Sunday, Tiivistämö will also feature the Elephant Lounge, where you can relax to the tunes played by DJs and enjoy drinks and food. Saturday will also see the rising rap talent NaharY perform on the terrace.

Showcasing sustainable development actors, the Market of Possibilities will bring more than 50 exhibitors from CSOs to authorities and enterprises to Helsinki’s Market Square on Sunday 29 May. Organisations taking part include the Festival’s main organiser, Fingo, as well as the Maailman Kuvalehti magazine, the Church in Helsinki, the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, UN Association of Finland, the Sosped Foundation’s Mieletöntä Value (Epic Light) programme and many more. The Market of Possibilities offers inspiring things to do as well as information about human rights, peace work, climate and environmental issues, animal rights, development cooperation, policy, and volunteering.

The Market of Possibilities will also feature Ernie’s Pop Up Spa where you can treat yourself to artistic therapies, holistic haircare and a spa spectacle. Artist Ernest Truely has developed his performance at international festivals, cultural events as well as on the street since 2015.
